Our Philosophy
Why study music or learn an instrument? Learning to play a musical instrument greatly enhances general life skills including patience, coordination, memory, planning and problem-solving skills, collaboration and teamwork, work ethic, discipline, the ability to form habits, and more. Playing music is also one of the few activities that activates all of the parts of the brain, so it is invaluable in developing, improving, and maintaining cognitive health.
At Bariolage, we believe that a musical education has far more impact than just improving one’s musical skills. Our program is designed to encourage and foster a nurturing and collaborative environment at home and in the teaching studio, develop a sense of self-confidence, and provide meaningful connections with the larger community.
HOME
The home environment plays a central role in the success of the student, as it shapes a child’s attitude, consistency, and overall musical development. Parents play an essential role at home by supporting home practice and regular listening to recordings to reinforce learning. Teachers work with the parents to establish a consistent practice routine and a positive but structured environment for practicing that will contribute to a young student’s motivation, progress, and confidence.
SCHOOL
Bariolage is a community program in which students and parents are actively involved. Students benefit from private instruction as well as group classes, large and small ensembles, and performance events and concerts. Group classes and activities encourage collaboration, teamwork, exploration, and respect. Select group sessions will be replaced by parent classes, which provide an opportunity for teachers and parents to strengthen the learning environment at home.
COMMUNITY
Giving back to our community through the sharing of music brings joy and inspiration to many, and is an important part of our philosophy at Bariolage. Students participate in a variety of performance opportunities including formal recitals and outreach concerts, and events and activities such as playdowns, workshops, and camps. These activities are an opportunity for students to connect with larger audiences, showcase their hard work, and build confidence.
